Interviewing a Japanese Cosplayer [RAW Interviews]

These interviews were conducted in 2010 and 2011, the first was a face to face interview, where as later ones had to be done via e-mail because she moved away.

The difficult thing about interviewing a Japanese person compared to a Westerner is that they're a lot more reluctant to talk about themselves and their opinions, especially if you don't know them too well. A lot of the time I got one word answers and when we were doing the face to face interview I had to prob her further to get more detailed responses.

Cosplay Interview with Reiko 1

Me: 始めてコスプレをすることはいつですか。

[When was the first time you cosplayed?]

Reiko: 始めて？えっと。。。大学二年生のとき。二十歳の時かな。

[The first time? Erm…the second year of university. When I was 20.

M:どうやって興味がありましたか。

[How did you become interested?]

R:大学の一年生の時同人誌のイベントに行ってそこにコスプレヤさんがいってかこよかったからやりたいと思った。

[In my first year of university I went to a doujinshi event where there were cosplayers. There were so cool I wanted to try it.]

M: その同人誌イベントは友達の紹介で見つけましたか。

[Did your friends introduce you to that doujinshi event?

R: 自分で見つけて行きました。

[I found it by myself]

M: その前に同人誌の興味がありましたか。

[Before that event did you have an interest in doujinshi?]

R: ありました。

[I did]

M: いつからですか。

[Since when?]

R: いつからかな。。。高校の二年生、十七歳ぐらいから。

[I wonder since when…second year of high school, since I was about 17]

M: そのイベントは初めてイベントですか。

[Was that the first event you had ever been to?]

R: 十七歳の？うん、そう、十七歳の時初めて行った。

[When I was 17? Yes, I went to my first when I was 17]

M: コスプレを買うか作るかですか。

[Do you buy or make your cosplay?]

R: 買ってちょっと直す。たまに少し違うの。

[I buy and normally adjust it. Occasionally it’s a little different.]

M: どうやってコスプレを選びますか。

[How do you choose your cosplay?]

R: 私が好きなアニメとかゲームの好きなキャラクターをしたい、やりたい。私が好きなキャラクターを選ぶ。でも時々友達と一緒にやりたい時はその友達のキャラクターに関係知っている？仲がよくてとか、ライバルなんてするキャラクターを選ぶこともある。

[I want to do characters from animes and games that I like. I choose characters I like. But sometimes when I want to do one with my friends, I do a character which has a relationship to my friends character (know what I mean)? I choose a character who’s close, or a rival.]

M: コスプレの他にどんな趣味がありますか。

[Aside from cosplay, what other hobbies do you have?]

R: マンガ読んだり、アニメ見たり、カラオケ、ゲームしたり。

[I read manga, watch anime, karaoke, and play games.]

M: いつコスプレをしますか。

[When do you cosplay?]

R: 一ヶ月に三回ぐらい。

[Roughly three times a month]

M: たいていどこコスプレをしますか。

[Where do you normally cosplay?]

R: 大阪のATCというショッピングマールみたいな所で毎週コスプレイベントがある。

[ATC, a place that looks like a shopping mall, in Osaka has cosplay events every week.]

M: このイベントはどうですか。

[How is this event?]

R: あのね、普通の人もいっぱいいって、普通の買い物をしてる人とかもいっぱいいってからちょっといっぱい見られる。外でもとれるから、写真がとれるから面白い。中だけじゃなくて外にも行ける。

[Well, there are also lots of normal people, people who are doing normal shopping, so there’s a bit of a lot of people looking. You can also cosplay outside so the photos are really interesting. You don’t have to go inside you can also go outside.]

M: コスプレをする時友達が多いですか。

[When you cosplay so you have a lot of friends?]

R: 友達？うん、イベントで友達ができるから友達の家族が多くなってくる。行くために友達が増える。「撮らしてください」とか撮ったりして、カード、めいし、交換して、名前をして、コスプレのSNSとか言って、メッセージ送ったら友達ができる。

[Friends? Yes, you can make friends at events so my family of friends has become really big. I go for the sake of increasing my friends. You can request photos and take pictures, and exchanging cards, business cards, which have their names and cosplay SNS (social network sites), so you can send them messages and become friends.]

M: コスプレのめいしを交換するですか。

[You exchange cosplay business cards?]

R: うん、自分の名前と写真があるカード

[Yep, they’re cards which have your name and photo.]

M: どうしてこのカードがありますか。

[Why do you have those cards?]

R: 例えば、その人はかこうよくて皆困難だろその人写真をもっと見たかったりか連絡がメッセージとかしたいと思ったら、その人の名前と顔がすぐ忘れちゃうからめいしを見てもらってNumberとかサイトが分かったら、あの、ホームページとか行けるからまた連絡後で。友達なる方法。

[For example, someone’s really cool and awesome with everyone that would be a problem. So you want to see more of that persons photos or contact them, but you’re probably going to forget their name and face so you receive their card with their number and sites, erm, so you can go to their homepage and contact them later. It’s the way to become friends.]

M: 誰とコスプレをしますか。

[Who do you cosplay with?]

R: 初めは大学の友達と行ったけどもうその子はやめちゃったから今はイベントで会った始めてできた友達とかと一緒にして行く。

[At first I went with my university friends but they’ve stopped now, so now I go with the friends that I first met at events.]

M: 今コスプレとする友達と仲がいいですか。

[Are you close with the friends who cosplay?]

R: 実際その人の名前とかどこで住んでいるとかpersonal informationは殆ど知らない。マナーとしてあまり聞いちゃうだめ、そのprivateのこと。なんでかわからないけど聞いちゃうだめで。。。何もその人知らないけどアニメとかそのキャラクター話で仲がよくなれるから。。。

[Well the truth is I don’t know things like their names, where they live, personal information. It’s not polite to ask people, about private things. I don’t know why but you’re not allowed to ask…but although you don’t know anything about the people, you can talk about anime and characters and get really close to them…]

M: じゃ、皆はキャラクターの名前を呼びますか。

[So everyone calls each other by their character’s names?]

R: そう、コスネームを使う。

[Yes, you use your Cosname]

M: コスネームですか。

[Cosname?]

R: 私は別の漢字の「あや」。私はちょっとかいたくなかっただってweirdだから、なんか、その人が別の名前で呼んでもわからないかもしれない。

日本のコスプレはそういう、そのマナーがある。ちょっとめどくさい。

[I use a use a different kanji to “Aya”. I want to socialise but it’s weird…erm…say someone calls me by a different name I probably wouldn’t understand! Japanese cosplay has a lot of cases like that, we have that mannerism. It’s a bit annoying]

M: どうしてですか。

[Why’s that?]

R: 何でかなあ？何ででしょうね。多分イベントで「写真撮らしてください」って言うてその人は。。。なんだろ。。。その人の態度が悪かったら多分、「２ちゃうねる」知ってる？めちゃな有名なPBSでネットやってそういう所にこの人あほうだとか書き困れて。。。なんだろ。。。bad reputationなちゃうからちょっと怖い、ちょっと怖い。だから親切にしないといけないというのは色々のある。

[I wonder why? I wonder why. Perhaps at events people who ask “Can I take your picture?” are…erm…those people have a bad attitude perhaps.  Do you know “2 Channel”? Really famous PBS (public broadcasting service) on the net, the people there can be idiots and write troublesome stuff…erm…you can get a bad reputation so it’s a little scary, a little scary. So you have to be kind in a lot of ways.]

M: コスプレをしなかったら友達と会いましたか。

[If you had never cosplayed do you think you would have met your friends?]

R: 会わないと思う。たまに本当に仲のいいコスプレの友達と普通に遊びに行ったりするけど、もしでもコスプレずっとしなかったらもう会わないと思う。

[I don’t think I would have. Occasionally I go out and play with the cosplay friends I’m really close to, so if I had never done cosplay I don’t think I would have met them.]

M: あやさんがコスプレをしているかどうか知らない人がいますか。家族とか友達ですか。

[Is there anyone who doesn’t know that you do cosplay? Your family or friends?]

R: 友達は。。。高校の友達とか、ちょっと言いにくい、ちょっと困る。言いたくない。

[Friends…It’s hard to tell my high school friends, a little troublesome. I don’t want to tell them.]

M: どうしてですか？

[Why is that?]

R: ちょっと恥ずかしい。あの、オタクってやっぱりマイナー、オタクって、特にコスプレはちょっとマイナーな文化だから、もうかしたらその人はそういう嫌いかもしてないし、キャラクターのイメージだから。。。

[It’s a bit embarrassing. Erm, it’s defiantly the manner towards otaku, otaku are, especially cosplayers, it’s a part of manner culture. So if you were to tell someone then they might hate you, because of the character’s image…]

M: 大学の友達はどうですか。

[How about your university friends?]

R: 知っている人多いかな。

[There are lots who know]

M: 家族は?

[And your family?]

R: 気にしてないと思う。最初は驚いたけど今別に、普通、何も、大丈夫。

[I don’t think they care. At first they were surprised but now it doesn’t matter, it’s normal, nothing, it’s all fine.]

M: コスプレをするために何をしますか。

[What do you do for cosplay?]

R: ダイエットとか？そういうの？ダイエットにもかうし、skin careもちょっと使うし、コスメのチェックとか、お金貯めたり、あとスケジュールをちゃんとあわせるようにしたりとか、色々な。

[Like diet? That kind of thing? I diet, use some skin care, have cosmetic checks, save money, as well as make sure my schedule works, all kinds of things.]

M: いつもコスプレの友達と話しますか。

[Do you always talk with your cosplay friends?]

R: うん、話す、話す。私はいつもコスプレヤのSNSにいるからそこで皆の日記、イベントしたりとか、しているよ。ネットでCosplay Archiveというサイト。

[Yep, we talk, we talk. I’m always on cosplay SNS so there we talk with everyone’s diaries, and at events. Cosplay Archive’s the site.]

M: いつも新しいコスプレを買いますか。

[Do you always buy a new cosplay?]

R: そういう時もある。時々、時々。でも私は何回も同じ衣装を使いたい、着たいから、大切にしたいから、あまり新しいの買わないようにしてる。衣装を一回着てすぐ捨てる人もいる。私はあまりしたくない。

[There are times when I do. Now and then, now and then. But I also want to use the same costume over and over again, I want to wear it, because I want to make it special. I don’t really have to buy a new one. There are people who will wear a costume once and then throw it away. I don’t really like doing that.]

M: もし全然コスプレをしないとしたら今違う人になったと思いますか。

[If you never got into cosplay do you think you’d be a different person now?]

R: 違うかもね。違うかもね。あの、コスプレをしてると自分に自信がつく。自分の自信になる。例えばイベントに何回か行くうちにカメラマンさんが話してきてくれて「撮らしてください」とか言ってきてすごくいい写真、すごくきれいな写真に写真を撮ってくれたりするから、なんか、すごく自信になる。私のレベルがあがるみたいかなあ。

[I would probably be different. I would probably be different. Erm, When I do cosplay I get confidence. I get more confident. For example, whenever I go to an event a cameraman will come up to me and ask “can I take a picture?” and make really good photos, really pretty photos, so, erm, really quickly I get confident. I can see I have a high level I guess.]

M: コスプレをしないとしたら今何をすると思いますか。

[If you had not done cosplay what do you think you would be doing now?]

R: 何してるんね。ただのマンガずき、ただのマンガオタクかな。でも昔からしてみたかった、コスプレ、したみたかったから。。。ま、Anyway,なんだろかな。考えられない。考えられない。多分絶対やってる。うん、考えられない。していなかったらただのオタク。

[What I’d be doing now. Just a normal manga lover, a normal manga otaku I guess. But since long ago I wanted to do it, cosplay, I wanted to try it so…well, anyway, I wonder what. I don’t know. I don’t know. Perhaps I would have defiantly done it. Yeah, I don’t know. If I hadn’t I would probably just be a normal otaku.]

M: どうしてコスプレをしていますか。

[Why do you cosplay?]

R: どうしてかな。最初はかこうい人がいたから憧れたけど、今は。。。なんだろ。。。そのキャラクターが好きていうもあるけど、変わる自分、自分の顔とか、変えるとか面白いと思う。例えばまつげがこんなことになったり、ダブルなひいたりとしたら顔が全然違う。自信見たら面白い。後、今若いから、若いうちに自分の。。。いい。。。なんだろ。。。いい自分を、若い自分を写真にちゃんとのごとしたい。だって年を撮ったら無理でしょ。コスプレは年を撮ったらできない。趣味だから今日がないもできない。

[I wonder why. At first it was because there were cool people so I really wanted to try it. Now…I wonder…there are characters that I like but also, I can change myself. My face and things I can change, it’s fun I think. For example, you make your eyelashes like this, double the size of your face so it looks completely different. If I see myself it’s fun. Also, now I’m young so while I’m young myself…well…erm…a good me, a young me, I want proper photos of myself. Because when I’m old it’s probably impossible to take. You can’t do cosplay when you’re old. It’s a hobby so even now there are days when I can’t cosplay.]

M: じゃ、何かコメントがありますか。

[So, do you have any comments?]

R: コメント？日本のコスプレイベントに行きましょう。行って楽しみしょう。

[Comments? Let’s go do Japanese cosplay. Let’s go have fun.]

 Cosplay Interview with Reiko 2

            This interviewee was interviewed as a preliminary informant in the Autumn. Because she graduated and moved cities there was no longer an opportune time to meet. As a result the questions were sent to her which she filled in and sent back.

In the times I’ve spoken to her and in both interviews she refers to herself as “cosplayer/layer” or “otaku”.

These interviews were split into different sections based on different aspects of cosplay culture I was studying at the time.

Me: What can you can tell me about cosplay? (Anything that comes to mind first)

コスプレについて何か教えてくれますか。（考えことができるものです。）

Reiko: コスプレは、好きなキャラクターになりきってその世界を表現することだと思います。

その作品を好きな人がそのキャラのコスプレをするので、作品を知ってからコスプレするほうがキャラの特徴もわかるし、一緒にあわせをする人とも話しやすいと思うので望ましいです。

最近は、マナーが悪くなってきてると聞きます。（幼い人が増えた）公衆の面前でBL的な絡みをしたり騒いだり・・・・。衣装もお金がかかるので、アルバイトができる年齢になってから始めたほうがいいと思います。

[I think cosplay is a world where you can turn into a character. People who like the product do character cosplay, and so I understand that because you know the product cosplay is more then a character’s characteristics, I think it’s easy to talk to people who join together to do cosplay, or so I hope.

Lately, I hear people’s manners have gotten bad. (The number of immature people has been increasing). In the public eye involvement in BL [boys love] has become more noisy….It also costs money to do costumes but I’ve reached the age you can do a job at so I think [doing cosplay] is better at first.]

[What are interests/hobbies?]

Reiko: カラオケ、アニメ、漫画を読む、ゲーム、旅行、ショッピング

-Cosplay:

M:どうしてコスプレに興味がわきましたか？

（何がげんいんで興味がわきましたか？）

[Why did you become interested in cosplay? （What drew you into this originally?）]

R: イベントで、すごく有名な格好いいレイヤーを見てからです。ずっと会いたかったキャラクターが目の前にいるようでﾄﾞｷﾄﾞｷしました。

M: たいていコスプレをした時何をしますか [What happens when you normally cosplay?]

R: 写真を撮影。あとはほかのレイヤーと交流。

[Take photos. Also exchange with other Layers]

M:  いつコスプレをしますか。どのくらいしますか。誰としますか。たいていどこでしますか。たいてい何をしますか。[When do you normally cosplay? How often? Who with? Where normally go? What normally do?]

R: 土日。でも平日でもスタジオやロケで撮影をしたりします。

今はスタジオとロケが中心です。

マクロスとボカロが最近はよくしてます。

でも好きな作品は何でもしたい！

[Sundays. But during the week I also do photographing at Stadio, or Roke. I do [cosplay] 2 -3 times a month. Go with Layer friends. Right now, I’m in the middle of Sadio and Roke. I’ve been doing a lot of Macross and Vocaloid lately. But I can do the products I like over and over again!]

M: ぜんかい、コスプレをした時、しょうさいで何をしたか教えてくれませんか

[Can you tell me in detail what happened the last time you cosplayed?]

R: VOCALOIDのMEIKO！！！KAITOとあわせました。ノーマルバージョンです。

[MEIKO FROM VOCALOID!!! I met up with KAITO. Normal versions.]

M: コスプレをした時何か感じますか。

[How do you feel when you cosplay?]

R: 好きなキャラの服を着られて嬉しいです。

[I get happy when I can wear the clothes of characters that I like.]

M: コスプレをする時しめいとかをかくしますか。どんなふうににかくしますか。どうしてですか。

[When you cosplay do you normally keep your real identity a secret? How do you do that? Why?]

R: はい。コスプレネームを作ります。

コスプレはまだ一般的に受け入れられていない趣味なので。またネットで世界中に見られる可能性があるので隠します。

[Yes. I make a cosplay name. Because cosplay isn’t popular yet, it’s an unaccepted interest. It’s still possible to still see our world on the net so we hide.]

M: コスプレをしている間にどうでしゃべますか。（自分でかキャラクターで）

[When you do cosplay how do you interact with others? (As yourself or as your character?)]

R: 自分です。キャラクターのまねをすると、気持ち悪いと思われるのがふつうです。

[Myself. If I behaved like the character then it’s normal to think that it would be gross*.]

M: たいてい何に自分のお金と時間をかけますか。たとえば一週間、一ヶ月にのあいだです。

[How much time and money do you normally spend on cosplay? (In a week or month)]

R: 2万以内

[At least 20,000 yen*]

[How do you save money for your hobby?]

R: 仕事

M: コスプレを買うか手作りしますか。どう選びますか。

[Do you normally buy costumes or make them? How do you choose what costumes to do?]

R: 不器用なので買います

[I have no skill so I buy them]

M: なぜこんなにコスプレのことが好きですか。

[Why are you so interested in cosplay?]

R: 好きなキャラに近づける気がするし、普段着れない服が着れて嬉しいから。

[I can feel close to the character, I feel happy when can wear clothes I can’t normally wear.]

M: コスプレをしないとしたらこっかはどう違うと思いますか。

[If you didn’t do cosplay how do you think the present would be different?]

R: 刺激が足らないと思います。でもなくても生きていけるかも

[I think I wouldn’t have any motivation. But even if I didn’t [do cosplay] I’d still be alive.]

M: コスプレをしている人はどんな人だと思いますか。

[What kind of people do cosplay?]

R: オタク笑　　または人から注目されたい人

[Otaku, haha. People who want attention from others.]

M:  他のコスプレを見るとはんだんしますか。

（何か悪い、いいコスプレですか）

[Do you judge other cosplay when you see them?]

R: やっぱりしてしまいます。見た目（スタイル）ですね。

[Of course I have. Their looks (style).]

-Social Relations:

M: 分かち合う友達はどんな人と思いますか。

[What are your friends who cosplay like?]

R: オタク笑 [Otaku haha.]

M:コスプレをしない人はどんな人と思いますか。

[How about the friends who don’t cosplay?]

R:？？ふつうの人か、オタクでもコスプレに興味のない人。

[Normal people? Otaku but they don’t have interest in cosplay.]

M:友達とコスプレをしている友達はこべつですか。

[Are your cosplaying friends separate from these friends?]

R: 別です。でも同じ友達もいます。（仕事場の友達がレイヤー）

[Separate. But I also have the same friends. (Work friends are also Layer’s)]

M: いつか両方と会いますか。

[Do they ever meet?]

R: 会うときもあるけど今は忙しい。

[There times when they meet but now they’re/I’m busy.]

M: コスプレをしない友達もいますか。

[Do you have friends who don’t cosplay?]

R: もちろん。

[Of course]

M: この友達はあんなたがコスプレをしているかどうか知っていますか。

[Do non-cosplayer friends know you cosplay?]

R: 知ってます。でも知らない人もいます。言う人を選らんで言ってます。

[They know. But there are also people who don’t know. I choose the people I tell.]

M: インターネットじょうの友達もいますか。

[Do you have friends online?]

R: はい [Yes]

M: 家族はあなたの趣味を理解（りかい）してくれますか。

[Does your family support you hobbies? ]

R: はい

[Yes]

M: 彼氏・彼女がいますか？いたことがありますか。欲しいのですか。

[Do you have a partner? Have you had a partner? Do you want one?]

R: いました。

今はどちらでもいいです。

[I had one. Now I don’t mind]

R: コスプレはしてなくても、何か同じ漫画とかゲームで話ができたら十分

[Doesn’t have to do cosplay, but it would be nice to talk about the same manga or games.]

R: 男のレイヤーはあまりすごくないから、コスプレイヤーの彼氏は別にいらない。

[Male cosplayers aren’t really that amazing so I don’t really need a boyfriend who does cosplay. But I want to be able to talk about games and manga.]

M: どうコスプレをしている友達に連絡しますか。（インタネットや会いますか）

[How do you contact/interact with cosplay friends when not cosplaying (internet, meet in person)?]

-Appearance:

M: コスプレをしなかったらどんな服を着るのが好きですか。

[What do you normally wear when you are not cosplaying?]

R: なんでも。自分の好きな服を着ます。スタイルはその時の気分

[Anything. I wear my own clothes that I like. My style is what I feel at the time.]

M: あなたの趣味はあなたの服のスタイルにえいきょう（影響）をおよぼしますか？

[Do your hobbies/interests affect the way you dress?]

R: いいえ。[No]

M: 服を選ぶ時に何かイメージはありますか。

[Is there an image that you identify with/like to dress as?]

R: 少しタイトでバランスがいい感じが好き。カラフルよりもモノトーンが好き

[I like to have a balance. I like monotone more then colourful.]

M: 服で何かあなたの興味を伝えるものがありますか。

[Is there anything you wear which shows your interests? (Symbols e.g characters on keychains)]

R: 服はないです。明らかなオタクファッションは嫌い

[On my clothes no. I don’t have any obvious otaku fashion.]

M: あなたの見た目のためがこていかんねん（固定観念）にとらわれた事がありますか？

[Have you ever been stereotyped because of your appearance?]

R: よくわからないけど、ないと思います。

[I don’t really understand but I don’t think so.]

M: 知らない人を見たらどうやって同じ趣味が持つがどうか見分けられますか。

[If you see someone on the street how can you tell if they have the same interests as you?]

R: 話し方、持ち物、メイク

[The way they talk, the things they have, make up.]

-Self identity:

M: 自分自身の趣味に関して、どのような単語で自分自身を説明しますか？

[How would you describe yourself in terms of your hobbies?]

R: 変身

M: どうしてこの単語を選びましたか？

[Why did you choose this term over the others?]

R: コスプレは本来の自分とは違う自分になることだと思うから。

[I think it’s because cosplay is essentially when I can turn myself into a different me.]

M: このアイデンティティをかくしますか。

[Do you keep this identity hidden?]

R: そんなに隠しません

[I don’t really hide it.]

-Labelled identity:

M: 他のひとから「オタク」か他の言葉と呼ばれたことがありますか。

[Have other people called you “otaku” or something else? ]

R: オタク　はあります。

M: 呼ばれたら何を感じますか

[How do you feel when/if they do?]

R: 最近はオタクって世間に知られてきているからあまり気にならない

[Lately ‘otaku’ is something the world is beginning to know so I don’t mind.]

-Otaku:

M:「オタク」ということは何だと思いますか。

[What do you think “otaku” is?]

R: 何かをすごく好きでお金も時間もかけられること

[Something which you really, really like so you spend a lot of money and time on it.]

M: 外国人は「オタク」になれますか

[Can foreigners be “otaku”?]

R: なってる人はいっぱいいます。

[There are loads of people who have become otaku]

M: 何か日本と外国の「オタク」は違いがありますか。

R: 日本人はアイメイクがとてもうまいと思う。でもすぐになんでも買えるから、

クオリティが平均的になる。

[I think Japanese people’s makeup is amazing. But even though it’s amazing you can buy anything so the quality is average.]

M: コスプレをしている外国人をどうとおもいますか。

[What do you think of foreign cosplayers?]

R: 楽しそう。でもちょっとウィッグとかが適当だったりする。

でもすごい人は本当にすごい！武器とか・・・・。

[Looks fun. But the wigs etc aren’t really proper. But amazing people are really amazing! The armour/weapons etc…]

M: 人々はコスプレのことについて何を考えると思いますか。

[What do you think other people think of cosplayers?]

R: むちゃくちゃオタクな趣味だと思ってるとおもう。

すごい綺麗な写真を撮るように努力してることを分かってもらえない。

ただの変な人と思われてる（説明するまで）

[I think they think that it’s a messy otaku hobby. They don’t understand it when amazingly pretty photos which are taken with a lot of effort. They just think they’re weird people.]

M: 人々はコスプレを見るとその人をはんだんするかどうかと思いますか。

[Do you think people will judge you if they find out, or see that you cosplay?]

R: すると思う。それは一般人でもすると思う。

[I think they will. I think that’s what ordinary people do.]
